As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I have found that different therapeutic styles and schools of thought are needed when working with clients. There is usually not one method that works for each client or even each stressor. As clients' issues are multifaceted, the therapist's techniques must be as well.
Some of the techniques I utilize include:
FAMILY SYSTEMS THERAPY: Examining the ways in which we interact with others and the world around us requires us to gain a greater sense of awareness. This awareness is what is necessary to change patterns in relationships, families, and even on an individual level. The interactions between people are just as important as the words we use to describe the stressor.
STRUCTURAL FAMILY THERAPY: Roles and structure are important to acknowledge in families. Each person has their own specific roles and expectations in the family unit. Newer, healthier patterns of interacting can emerge when we are able to restructure the stressful dynamics within the family. This will create a deeper connection between each member. Every member in the family is important and they each play a role in finding solutions.
NARRATIVE THERAPY: Talking about and exploring one's life story is important in the healing process. Sometimes our personal stories may include painful memories and experiences. Being able to rewrite our story in a way that identifies strengths and resources will lead to (sometimes much needed) self-acceptance and self-compassion.
INTERPERSONAL THERAPY: During our lifetime it is inevitable that we will face hardships and struggles. These experiences often lead to depression and anxiety. Interpersonal Therapy helps clients identify relationships that are helpful and supportive. Finding new ways to cope with life stressors will also help the client have stronger, healthier relationships with others AND themselves.
PSYCHODYNAMIC THERAPY: Childhood plays a pivotal role in how we process thoughts and feelings as an adult. Allowing one's self the ability to explore the traumatic experiences and childhood messages will be necessary to make positive, lasting change. This type of therapy requires a lot of self-reflection and awareness of one's emotions and internal processes. This is hard work but NEEDED work if there is a history of trauma throughout one's life.
SOLUTION-FOCUSED THERAPY: This type of therapy is usually considered to be short-term therapy. We focus on the current problem(s) and how to make adjustments to one's life. Those who struggle with mild to moderate depression and anxiety may benefit from short-term therapy. If one is looking for assistance in making a life decision or just needing feedback on a current situation, Solution Focused therapy may be the best fit.
